Based on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast Panorama builds a range of fibreglass and concrete pools. In 2007 and 2008 our pools won Gold Awards in both the Queensland and National Swimming Pool and Spa Association awards, judged independently and by our competitors and peers we’re happy to receive the reccongnition. Now in 2009 we’re looking forward to the new year and seeing if we can make it a hat trick in the latter part of the year.

So whether in ground, above ground concrete or fibreglass, kit or fully constructed, please give us a call we’d love to be able to get you in the swim of things

Concrete Pools

We’re as pleased as punch, this year we have won the independently judged best concrete pool in Queensland under $50,000. This award for a Domestic Pool in a Geometric Design, was for a very traditional pool in a lovely old Brisbane suburb. We were pleased to be part of the process for the home owner and their young family. Putting the awards to one side, this is a beautiful pool and yard being a real asset for the family.

Concrete pools offer a range of architectural solutions that perhaps fibreglass can’t meet and that’s their strength. The series of photos below and associated comments are intended to show some nice pictures with a focus on the design features. It’s not a comprehensive pallet by any means, rather providing fertile ground for thought and some terminology to assist in communicating ideas on the pool you want or desire for your yard.

The above illustrated pool, is generally referred to as a Formal Pool, that is, it has a lot of straight lines and is geometric in design.

concrete informal Beach

This pool to the left is what is called an informal or Freeform pool as it does not adhere to geometric shapes and quite literally is marked out on your site with a free hand.

In the foreground is a beach entry, which is a shallow play area that gets progressively deeper. Please talk to one of our sales advisors about the benefits and limitations of beach entries and children’s play.

To the right again a freeform pool, with a roll top. That is the internal surface that rolls up and out onto the coping

This is a large pool and like the above pool has large natural quarried rock features. The size of these features exclude manual handling and require machinery to place them. Our Sales Advisors can discuss the costs and our suggestions as to rock selection and placement.

Concrete Informal Small

Again a freeform pool, with a Roll Top. That is the internal surface of the pool rolls up and out over the coping

This is a smaller budget built concrete pool, with a gold pebble mix. This picture highlights that a fibreglass pool, quite probably would have served the same function and at a more economical cost with improved aesthetics. The purpose of this illustration is that concrete is not necessarily the best choice, it is just a different one.

A formal pool with a Roman Entry, unlike a beach entry this step provides a level base typically between 300 to 600mm of water depth.

Surrounding this pool is concrete paving from Stone Directions (www.stonedirections.com.au) The leading edge pavers that have a bull nose profile, which provides a softer rounded face of the paving facing the water’s edge.

Concrete Small1

A formal pool built right on the boundary of the yard (zero boundary). In this case a wall 1.8m high wall has been constructed in cement block, rendered and painted as part of the pool construction.

The home owner has added a bamboo hut to hide the pump and filter along with adding a few decorative flowers to the wall. ,

A freeform pool with an 800mm wide paved surround. This pool also features a ceramic tile band. The statues have been bonded with reinforcement steel so as not to present a risk to children if they start swinging off them.

As an aside, this picture is a ‘ring in’ as it is a fibreglass pool.

Water Feature Tiki

Concrete Resort 1

This is a resort pool built in Noosa and has a bit of everything. It has large swim out step areas for shallow water play. To the top of the picture you can see an integrated spa. Planter boxes form part of the walls of the pool.

These stepping stones are known as Castellations, a popular feature on the formal or geometric pools. You’ll note from the picture the castellations are found in shallow water or as this picture shows are mounted on a step beside the deep end of the pool.

Castellations often are dressed with a ring of ceramic tiles as illustrated in this picture.

Water Feature Castellations

Water Feature Waterblade

This is known as a Water Blade, in this case it is 1200mm wide blade mounted about 1200mm above the water (often it is mounted lower to reduce noise).

It’s a good idea to include a tile feature behind a water blade to provide definition to the falling water.

The industry tends to label long skinny pools as Lap Pools. Small pools are typically called Plunge Pools. The pool picture here shows a pool that is partially built into the ground and partly out of the ground, utilising a tinted and colour chipped pebble mix.

Concrete Lap1

Concrete Resort 2

This pool in a Noosa residential resort includes a Wet Deck. The water level of the pool is essentially level with the pools surround

The waves generated by swimmers lap into specially designed gutters surrounding the pool. Not seen in this picture is the underground reservoir that acts as an overflow and assists in controlling the pool’s water levels when bather load and evaporation are taken into account.

A popular feature is the Wet Edge, sometimes called an Infinity or Disappearing Edge. In essence the water cascades over the edge of the pool into a second pool or reservoir.

On the odd occasion a gutter and remote reservoir like a water tank is used as in the wet deck. This is a necessary component to control the water level when bather load and evaporation is taken into account.

Concrete Informal Display

This is our display pool at Maroochydore taken some 15 years ago you might want to drop in and see how it has aged.

This pool features, man sized rocks on the edge (a single person can place them without assistance of a machine), a roll top coping and a section of coping that has PGH clay paving fixed.

This lap pool incorporates a ceramic tile detail line, these lines can be installed along the edge of a step or as per this diagram as a lane marker
