Concrete or Fibreglass?

What a question! With sales guys, friends and family firmly entrenched in one camp or the other and then to upset the mix there is always the low cost above ground option if you want to keep a tight reign on the spending. It’s hard to separate the advice from the salesmanship.

At Panorama we have a foot in each camp - fibreglass and concrete. Don’t worry we’re not a ‘jack of all trades’ with expertise in both construction methods and have specialized teams to install and build each. Moreover we’ve won State and National awards for both construction methods, so we feel well qualified to offer a balanced opinion in the matter.

In overview, both pool types offer excellent swimming options. In some cases your yard may dictate which is the best choice. However if you are undecided we would ask you to talk to one of our sales team to run through the features and benefits of each construction method. The outcome you’ll arrive at will be an informed decision, selecting the product that has the best balance of value and features for you. Then its simple; you let us know whether you want, a Panorama Fibreglass Pool or a Panorama Concrete Pool.

Concrete Pools are each individual constructions with the pool being created on site by our installation teams

The implication is each pool takes longer to construct, but you are not limited to a specific design. Hence we can create a pool that integrate and interacts with your house in an innovative way

Fibreglass pools are created and manufactured to exacting specifications from a mould and delivered to your back yard to install

The implication is the fibreglass pool being prefabricated can be installed in a fraction of the time of a concrete pool. It also makes the selection process easier, select a shape, select a company you trust and away you go.

Concrete Pools can be installed at just about any site

The concrete pool can be manufactured as a free standing structure and within your budget to any size and shape. This means if your on the side of a mountain, or you have a tiny space for a pool concrete is your answer

Fibreglass pools can be installed in any soil type including reactive soils.

The fibreglass pool is a strong and flexible structure, however it does depend on the surrounding soil for support. This typically (but not always) excludes steep sites and sites where all or a significant part of the pool needs to be above the ground. From Sand to Highly reactive clay fibreglass pools really install well and without problem.

Concrete Pools are low maintenance

Modern pool finishes and pool equipment are easy to use , dead easy to maintain and provides good longevity. Moreover there is a wide range of equipment and designs that can reduce your maintenance load. Talk to us about how much labour you want to save and we can help balance that with how much you want to spend

Fibreglass Pools are low maintenance

The fibreglass pool takes the prize on this one, in essence you can achieve the same low maintenance result, for less money. The reason is simple, concrete is a porous product that does have some reaction with the pool chemistry, whereas fibreglass is a big inert resin container that is very smooth and not porous, with virtually no reaction with the water.

Maintenance is a hotly debated topic between the concrete and fibreglass sales people, as to who has the best maintenance record and which has better longevity. Our pool consultants are able to provide a lot of detail in this area if you are undecided as to which one is the best overall balance for your yard.

I have a bunch of kids which is best?

The concrete pool can incorporate many different water features both decorative and play

I have a bunch of kids which is best?

Fibreglass is the clear winner here. The smooth surfaces are not abrasive to the skin even after they’ve been in the pool long enough to look like a prune. Rough water play and such has the fibreglass more forgiving when you find the kids getting carried away. The easy maintenance is also a winner here as kids rarely are tidy swimmers. Goggles, flippers, inflatable toys all come off better in a fibreglass pool.

Wide range of finishes

The vast majority of concrete pools are finished in a 1 - 2mm natural pebble finish. Colour chips can be added to create stronger hues of blue or green to suit. Other less common finishes such as Quartzon, acrylic paints and even fibreglass are also available at a premium

Choice of Colours and Gel Coat Styles

Fibreglass pools are finished in a smooth gel coat that is definitely not abrasive (gel coat is the colour coating over the fibreglass structure). The floor of the fibreglass pool has a fine ‘stippling’ to provide a non slip surface to walk on in the shallow end and of course for the steps.
